The Top 5 Ways to Get Your Kids Excited About Golf

As a parent, I can think of a lot worse things for my kids to be doing than playing golf. After all, spending a few hours out on the links, and meeting the other members of the club, or course is not exactly abhorrent behavior.
The problem is, Golf is not always exciting for the young folks out there. With competition like iPods, video games, YouTube, Facebook and more, Golf doesn’t always rank high on their list of MUST DO activities. Well, I am here to help you change that. I am a parent, and one that has experience with golf AND all of the technology items I listed.
This experience will help me help YOU get your kids golfing and EXCITED about golf in no time! Follow the list, and pretty soon, you will have a new golf buddy by your side…your son or daughter…what more could you ask for?
1. Find some potential friends for them through your golf buddies - If you belong to a Country Club or a local Golf Course, chances are, the members there have kids the same age as yours. Check to see if any of them play golf or have an interest. Then, set up a time for all of you to hit the links. A good started may be just to have dinner at the course (if there is a restaurant) or hitting some balls on the practice tees. If the kids get along, encourage them to spend some time on the course.
2. Buy a golf video game for them - Let’s face it, some of the games out there today are like REAL LIFE! Tiger Woods’ video game would inspire just about anybody to pick up a club. Buy the game, learn it YOURSELF, and invite your son or daughter to play. This will start to get them familiar with it. Let them win a few times…and then ask if they want to put the skills they learned from the game into real life practice. You just might be surprised.
3. Ask them to join a Facebook group about golf - Tell them you want to get some info about local golf spots and such, but you are not familiar with Facebook. Ask if they will join the group to help gather info for you. Kids LOVE to be the authority on things. Once they start gathering the knowledge, this will open up conversations about the game. Encourage them to watch some on TV with you now that they are more familiar with it. This is a sneaky, but effective way to bridge the gap to your kids playing golf.
4. Challenge them - Want to know how my father got me involved? Golf based incentives. My Dad once challenged me to a putting contest. He would up my allowance for certain shots and such to encourage me to play, and one time, I will never forget, he said if I could sink the next putt, he would buy me the microscope that I had been wanting. Mind you, this was a 70 foot putt…seemed outrageous, BUT I really wanted that microscope. Guess what? I SUNK that baby! He almost flipped out, but we went right to the store and got that microscope! I was hooked from then on. I guess this might seem like bribery, but it worked, and bribing your kids for a POSITIVE result may not be the worst thing in the world.
5. Buy them a set of clubs, a cool golf shirt, and a day at a nice golf resort - No question about it, ownership promotes respect and authority. My first set of Chi Chi Rodrigues junior clubs was my prized possession. My Dad had them for me on Christmas Day and I could have been more excited. Get your kids set up with a good set of clubs and some golf clothes and hit the links!
Golf is a sport. It is a sport of etiquette and respect. It is a POSITIVE activity for today’s youth. Getting your kids involved means they will be spending time learning a skilled sport, spending time with nature, and meeting and relating with other folks in a positive environment. Get them involved today, and help to make them positive adult role models of tomorrow.
